5,284 map objects carrying a datacentre tag, as mapped in OpenStreetMap on 2026-10-10

Where anybody has written a datacentre into OpenStreetMap — a public, openly-licensed map that anyone can read and anyone can edit — attributed to a country and counted. The United States map on this site joins each of its pins to the water and the grid around it; no such join exists for the rest of the planet, so this page joins nothing. It draws, it attributes, and it counts.

5,284 datacentres, as mapped in OpenStreetMap on 2026-10-10. That is the number of map objects, and it is not the number of datacentres in the world. A country with no mapped datacentre is a country nobody has mapped. It is not a country with no datacentres, and this data cannot tell those two apart.

5,284 datacentres mapped as mapped in OpenStreetMap on 2026-10-10. Not a count of datacentres that exist.
114 countries with a site of 237 in the roster. The other 123 have none mapped, which means nobody has mapped them.
5,124 operating a datacentre tag with no construction, proposed or planned qualifier
119 under construction a construction tag, in OpenStreetMap
41 announced a proposed or planned tag; located to the evidence, never more precisely
38.8% in the United States 2,050 sites. Not the same count as /map, which keeps only what it can place in a county.
79 in no country polygon published as unresolved, never guessed. Drawn on the map where the coordinate is, with no country in the popup.

What should you read before the world map?

A country with no mapped datacentre is a country nobody has mapped. It is not a country with no datacentres, and this data cannot tell those two apart.

Every figure on this page counts map objects carrying a datacentre tag in OpenStreetMap on 2026-10-10. Coverage follows volunteers, not deployments: a dense country is a country somebody mapped, and comparing two countries here is partly comparing how many people were looking.

This page joins nothing; it counts. The United States figure here is not the figure on How many datacentres has SIREN mapped in the United States?, which keeps only the sites it can place in a county and joins them to drought, grid and river data. Both numbers are printed, and neither is adjusted toward the other.

Where are the mapped datacentres on Earth? 5,284

One pin per mapped site, drawn exactly where OpenStreetMap places the object. The picture needs no JavaScript and every figure in it is a number in the table below. With it, the map pans and zooms, and hovering or tapping a pin names the site, its operator, its status and its place — or says which of those OpenStreetMap does not record.

5,284 pins, Equal Earth projection, so Greenland is not drawn the size of Africa and Europe is not drawn the size of Asia. Shape is status; every pin is one size and one colour, because no other field is joined to a site outside the United States. Data © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL v1.0. Outlines: Made with Natural Earth. Free vector and raster map data @ naturalearthdata.com.

Below 760 pixels the map is drawn only once the script has wired up pinch and zoom: 5,284 pins on a 343-pixel picture is a smudge, and a smudge that cannot be read still looks authoritative. The table below carries every channel the map encodes except position.

What does shape mean on this map?

operating 5,124
under construction 119
announced 41

Distinguishable in greyscale and in a screenshot. Status is read from the OpenStreetMap tag that set it: a construction tag is under construction, a proposed or planned tag is announced, anything else with a datacentre tag is operating. Every pin carries its status in the JSON. Shape is status.

Why is every pin one colour?

every pin 5,284

On the United States map colour is the drought in the pin's county and size is its tagged capacity. Neither join exists outside the United States, so here every pin is the same size and the same colour, and nothing is being said by either. A pin is 2.4 units across and is drawn exactly where OpenStreetMap places the object.

What is not drawn?

Antarctica 0
no outline, pins drawn 107
no country resolved 79
outside the frame 0

Antarctica carries no mapped datacentre and the frame stops at 57° south, so it is left off rather than drawn empty. 7 countries with a mapped site have no outline at the 1:110m scale drawn here — Singapore (92), Hong Kong S.A.R. (6), Bahrain (4), Isle of Man (2), Curaçao (1), Faroe Islands (1), Mauritius (1) — so their 107 pins sit on what looks like sea. They are in the table with a note. 79 pins fell inside no country polygon and are drawn without a country: the popup says so, and they have no row in the country table but one row of their own at its foot. Every site with a coordinate fell inside the drawn frame; a site outside it would be listed here in words rather than dragged to the edge.

Which countries have a mapped datacentre site? 114/237

Ranked by sites mapped. United States of America tops the ranking with 2,050 — 38.8% of every mapped site on Earth — and that is a fact about where OpenStreetMap's datacentre mappers are as much as about where datacentres are. The 123 countries in the roster with none mapped are not a tail of this ranking; they are outside it, because nobody has looked. Which AI datacentre countries have SIREN pages? each have a page.

How much computing hardware is in orbit?Off the planet 23

There are no data centres in space. On the as-of date, hardware in orbit that could be called compute totals a few dozen spacecraft; the constellations filed with regulators total more than a million. A register that printed only the filed number would be repeating a press release.

23 spacecraft in orbit carrying compute hardware on 2026-09-27, against 1,142,481 satellites filed or planned for it — 49,673 on paper for every one flying — and a further 193,428 filed with the purpose unstated. The two numbers are printed together everywhere on this page, because the second one printed alone is a press release.

Every programme in the register, in the register's own order. In orbit now is hardware in space on the as-of date; claimed or filed is the programme's own number, on paper. They sit in adjacent columns so neither is read without the other. Sources are numbered links; the row says where its sources disagree.

A register of every programme that claims, files for, or has flown computing hardware in orbit or on the Moon described as a data centre. Each row separates what is actually in space from what has been announced or filed, with the sources for both.

What can the register say and not say?

Every date, count and figure below is taken from a linked source; where sources disagree the row says so. Nothing is estimated.
in_orbit_spacecraft counts spacecraft carrying compute hardware that is in space on the as-of date. Hosted payloads on another programme's satellites are not counted twice: Axiom's two nodes ride on Kepler's ten.
filed_or_planned_satellites is the number in the programme's own filing or stated target. It is a number on paper. It is printed beside the flown number so it cannot be read alone.
Statuses change at launch. A launch is not commissioning and commissioning is not first inference; a row moves to operating only when a source reports the hardware working.
Programmes with unverified purpose (CTC-1/2, Space Compass) are listed with their purpose left blank rather than assigned to orbital compute.

What can this world map say and not say?

A country with no mapped datacentre is a country nobody has mapped. It is not a country with no datacentres, and this data cannot tell those two apart.

Published by the collector, printed here unedited.

Every figure counts map objects carrying a datacentre tag in OpenStreetMap on 2026-10-10. It is not a count of datacentres that exist.
Status is read from the tags: a construction tag is under construction, a proposed or planned tag is announced, anything else with a datacentre tag is operating. A tag that has not been updated since a building opened is still "under construction" here.
Countries are assigned by point-in-polygon against Natural Earth 1:50m outlines, generalised to about 1 km. 25 sites sit within about 2 km of a border and could belong to the neighbour. 79 sites fall in no polygon and are published as unresolved rather than guessed.
Coverage follows volunteers, not deployments. A dense country is a country somebody mapped; a blank one may simply not have been mapped.
The United States figure here differs from /map, which keeps only the sites it can place in a county and joins them to drought, grid and river data. This page joins nothing; it counts.
0 elements arrived without a usable coordinate and were dropped; 0 carried no tags.

How each site got its country. 5,200 sites were placed by point-in-polygon; 5 fell in no polygon and were placed by their own addr:country tag; 79 had neither and are published as unresolved. 1 site carries an addr:country tag that disagrees with the polygon it fell in; the polygon wins and the disagreement is flagged in the JSON. 7 countries with a mapped site have no outline at the 1:110m scale this map is drawn at — the attribution used the 1:50m file, which has them — so their pins are drawn over sea. This is a snapshot and not a time series: nothing here says when a datacentre opened or whether anything runs in it, only that an OpenStreetMap object with the tag exists.

Where did the world map data come from?

OpenStreetMap via Overpass, worldwide. One planet-wide query against https://overpass-api.de/api/interpreter, keyless, for 16 tag variants; 5,284 elements came back in 1,820 KiB, 0 without a usable coordinate and 0 without tags. OpenStreetMap's own snapshot clock for this extract reads 2026-10-10T17:15:48Z; this file was generated 2026-10-15 05:25:14 UTC (cache, refreshed every 7 days).

What is the Overpass query?

Sent as the data= field of a GET, which Overpass accepts identically to a form-encoded POST. Every figure on this page is arithmetic over the response.

How was geography assigned?

Countries were assigned against Natural Earth 1:50m admin-0 countries (v5.1.2), 242 polygons, public domain, read from cache 12 days old and refreshed every 90 days. country polygons generalised to about 1 km; a site within about a kilometre of a land border can be assigned to the neighbour, and says so. The border flag steps 0.02 degrees out in eight directions and checks whether any of them lands in a different country. A site in no polygon is published as unresolved.

The outlines drawn above are a different, coarser file: Natural Earth, 1:110m Admin 0 - Countries (ne_110m_admin_0_countries.geojson), public domain, retrieved 2026-09-27 — 177 countries, 287 rings, 5,481 vertices after simplification by visvalingam-whyatt, minimum triangle 0.2 deg², coordinates quantised to 0.01°. Drawing is not attribution: a pin's country came from the finer file, and the coarser one is only the picture under it. Made with Natural Earth. What is the licence?

© OpenStreetMap contributors — https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright. Open Database License (ODbL) v1.0. Attribution is a term of that licence, not a courtesy, and it is carried in the payload so no renderer can lose it.

Source osm-world · no API key · generated 2026-10-15 05:25:14 UTC · built by collector/world.mjs. This does not feed the SIREN index and has no route into it.

Where can you take the world map data?

Published beside this page byte-identical to the committed files — the build copies them verbatim rather than re-serialising, so the checksum of the file in the repository is the checksum of the file served here.

/api/world.json Every number on this page: the totals, all 5,284 sites with coordinate, status, name, operator, city and country, the 114 country rows, the copy block and the honesty list. OpenStreetMap data, ODbL.
/api/orbital.json The orbital register: 15 programmes, each with what is in space, what is filed, and the sources for both.

What questions do people actually ask?

How many datacentres has SIREN mapped on Earth?

5,284 map objects carrying a datacentre tag in OpenStreetMap, as mapped in OpenStreetMap on 2026-10-10. That is a count of map objects, not the number of datacentres in the world.

What should you read before the world map?

Every figure on this page counts map objects carrying a datacentre tag in OpenStreetMap. Coverage follows volunteers, not deployments: a dense country is a country somebody mapped.

Where are the mapped datacentres on Earth?

One pin per mapped site, drawn exactly where OpenStreetMap places the object. 5,284 pins on an Equal Earth projection.

Which countries have a mapped datacentre site?

Ranked by sites mapped. Countries in the roster with none mapped are outside the ranking, because nobody has looked — not because there are none.

How much computing hardware is in orbit?

Spacecraft in orbit carrying compute hardware against satellites filed or planned for it. The two numbers are printed together everywhere on this page, because the second one printed alone is a press release.

What can this world map say and not say?

A country with no mapped datacentre is a country nobody has mapped. It is not a country with no datacentres, and this data cannot tell those two apart.

Where did the world map data come from?

One planet-wide Overpass query against OpenStreetMap, keyless. Attribution is a term of the ODbL licence, not a courtesy.

What can the register say and not say?

Honesty limits for the orbital-compute register are listed under that heading when the register is present — what the filings can and cannot establish.

What is the Overpass query?

The method section prints the Overpass query sent as the data= field of a GET. Every figure on this page is arithmetic over the response.

How was geography assigned?

Countries were assigned against Natural Earth admin-0 countries. Drawing outlines use a coarser file; a pin's country came from the finer file.

What is the licence?

What does shape mean on this map?

Shape is status. Status is read from the OpenStreetMap tag that set it: construction, proposed or planned, or operating. Every pin carries its status in the JSON.

Why is every pin one colour?

Neither drought nor capacity joins exist outside the United States, so here every pin is the same size and the same colour, and nothing is being said by either.

What is not drawn?

Countries with no mapped datacentre, sites outside the drawn frame, and pins with no usable coordinate are listed in the legend rather than dragged onto the map empty.

Where can you take the world map data?

Published beside this page byte-identical to the committed files — /api/world.json carries every number on this page.

Does a country with none mapped have zero datacentres?

A country with no mapped datacentre is a country nobody has mapped. It is not a country with no datacentres, and this data cannot tell those two apart.

Does the world map feed the main SIREN number?

No. This page is a SIREN sub-index. It draws, attributes, and counts mapped sites — it does not feed the hourly activity index.

Does SIREN publish a world-map doom score?

No. Activity tempo, not probability of harm. The world map counts OpenStreetMap datacentre tags — not a probability of harm and not a forecast.
