Is AI taking jobs? What has actually been measured

Everybody has a forecast for what AI does to work. This page has no forecast. It lists what has been counted so far, who counted it, and what the count does not show.

2 entries from the hand-verified registers, checked as of 2026-09-28. A count of announced cuts is not a count of jobs lost to AI, and none of these entries says what happens next.

How many AI-cited US job cuts has Challenger counted?

  • 116,175 announced job cuts citing AI, Jan–Aug 2026 2026-09-03
  • 54,836 announced job cuts citing AI, 2025 2026-01-08
  • 3,462 announced job cuts citing AI, August 2026 2026-09-03

What is measured?

Challenger, Gray & Christmas tallies the reasons employers give when they announce job cuts. AI was cited for 54,836 of 1,206,374 announced cuts in 2025 (about 4.5%), and for 71,825 since the category began in 2023. From January to August 2026, AI was cited for 116,175 of 529,914 (about 22%), making it the most-cited reason so far this year. In August 2026 it fell to 3,462, its lowest monthly total since December 2025.

What gets claimed?

AI is already taking hundreds of thousands of jobs.

What is the caveat?

These are announced plans with the employer's stated reason. They are not measured job losses, and they do not prove AI caused the cuts. Total announced cuts in 2026 are down 41% year on year. A separate 'Technological Update (possibly AI)' category counted 20,219 in 2025.

What happened to Upwork freelancer earnings after ChatGPT?

  • 2 percent fewer monthly jobs for affected freelancers 2023-08
  • 5.2 percent lower monthly earnings for affected freelancers 2023-08

What is measured?

Hui, Reshef and Zhou (Organization Science 35(6):1977–1989, November 2024) use a difference-in-differences design on Upwork. After ChatGPT's release, freelancers in more-affected occupations saw monthly jobs fall 2% and monthly earnings fall 5.2%, relative to less-affected occupations. They find similar effects after image-generation models, and suggestive evidence that top freelancers were hit harder.

What gets claimed?

Generative AI is replacing knowledge workers.

What is the caveat?

The exact percentages come from the CESifo working paper (August 2023). The published abstract gives only the direction of the effect, and the journal page returned 403. In a July 2025 Brookings piece summarising the published paper, the authors give about 2% fewer new monthly contracts and roughly 5% lower monthly earnings. The study covers short-run effects on one online freelance platform, not the wider labour market.

What questions do people actually ask?

Is AI taking jobs? What has actually been measured

This page does not answer with a forecast. It lists announced job cuts that cite AI and measured effects on freelancers, each with a source and a caveat. A count of announcements is not a count of jobs lost to AI.

Does SIREN publish a jobs forecast?

No. SIREN’s main index is an hourly AI activity count. The jobs page is a view of the hand-verified registers and does not feed the main number.

What is measured?

Each register entry states what is counted for jobs, layoffs, hiring or the workforce: the figure, its unit and the source date — not a forecast.

What gets claimed?

Each entry states what the source claims about jobs, layoffs, hiring or the workforce. Claims are not the same as verified outcomes.

What is the caveat?

Each entry states the caveat that keeps the figure from being read as a SIREN forecast or doom probability.
