Questions

What should be in an emergency preparedness kit?

Ready.gov's basic kit is water (one gallon per person per day), non-perishable food, a battery or hand-crank radio, a flashlight, a first aid kit, extra batteries, a whistle, dust masks, plastic sheeting and duct tape, wipes and garbage bags, a wrench to turn off utilities, a manual can opener, local maps and a phone charger. Add medicines, documents, cash and supplies for babies and pets.

How much water and food should I store?

Ready.gov says at least one gallon of water per person per day, and enough food and water for several days, or two weeks if you are staying home. The free water and food calculator works out the total for your household.
